Who should be next england's manager? (#379) on 06-10-2011 at 15:58:08

Harry Redknapp:

Key achievements: Guided Portsmouth to FA Cup glory in 2008. Led Tottenham into the Champions League in 2010.

Possible stumbling blocks: His career has been dogged with corruption allegations, which he strongly denies.

Roy Hodgson:

Key achievements: Won five Swedish Championships in a row with Malmo. Has vast managerial experience across the world. Led Fulham to Europa League final 2009.

Possible stumbling blocks: Despite his experience he has yet to win a significant honour with a household name.

Martin O' neill:

Key achievements: Won the League Cup twice with Leicester City. Led Celtic to two Scottish League and Cup doubles along with another SPL title and Scottish Cup victory. Managed Celtic to the final of the Uefa Cup in 2003. League Cup runners-up in 2010 with Aston Villa.

Possible stumbling blocks: Is seen by some to have too little experience at the top level needed to lead a national team. He has had a number of high-profile disputes with playing and management staff, most recently with former boss Randy Lerner. Not the perfect warm-up for dealing with the FA.

Stuart Pearce:

Key achievements: Led England to the final of the 2009 Uefa Under-21 Championships.

Possible stumbling blocks: Prior to the Under-21 job, Pearce only had one managerial stint, at Manchester City. In addition to the lack of experience, it was an unsuccessful period, which saw him sacked by the end.

Steve Bruce:

Key achievements: Took Birmingham City to the Premier League for the first time in 15 years in 2001.

Possible stumbling blocks: He has not won a major trophy as a manager and has little experience at the top level of the English Premier League.

Sam Allardyce

Key achievements: Guided Bolton Wanderers to the Premier League in 2001, the League Cup final in 2004, and Uefa Cup qualification in 2005 for the first time in the club?s history.

Possible stumbling blocks: Like Redknapp, Allardyce has been implicated in football corruption, allegations he strongly denies. He was not successful when he last went for the job in 2006, so might lack what the FA see as the required talents.

Jose Mourinho

Key achievements: Portuguese League and Cup double and Uefa Cup in 2002-03, Champions League winners 2004. Led Chelsea to first top flight championship in 50 years, retained it the year after. Serial title winner with Inter, before winning the Champions League as his last act prior to leaving for Madrid.

Possible stumbling blocks: The self-proclaimed "Special One" has a very high opinion of himself and this has affected his relationship with board members in the past.

Alan Shearer

Key achievements: Former England captain.

Possible stumbling blocks: Qualifications and experience. Shearer has only managed eight games in his career, and that ended when Newcastle were relegated in 2009, albeit that they were well on their way to that when he took over.

Guus Hiddink

Key achievements: Along with multiple domestic trophies, he has led many international teams. He achieved fourth place at two World Cups with Holland and South Korea in 1998 and 2002 respectively, and secured Australia?s first appearance in a finals for 32 years in 2006. With Russia he qualified ahead of England for Euro 2008, and currently is unbeaten as Turkey coach in Euro 2012 qualifying.

Possible stumbling blocks: In 2007, Hiddink was found guilty of tax evasion and given a six-month suspended sentence and £30,000. Having only taken the Turkey job last month, England would have to pay substantial compensation to get their man.

Ian Holloway

Key achievements: In 2009-10 he guided Blackpool from the bottom of the Championship to the top flight for the first time in 40 years.

Possible stumbling blocks: He is still a young manager, and until this season he had never tasted top-flight football as a coach.

Arsene Wenger

Key achievements: Two doubles with Arsenal and two further FA Cups. Fourteen years in top-flight English football with one club.

Possible stumbling blocks: The Gunners would be loath to let their manager go especially after signing him up for another three years this summer. He could attract the ire of the Arsenal fans if he left after saying "my heart belongs to Arsenal".

David Beckham

Key achievements: Former England captain, highest capped outfield player, has been in the set up for over 10 years and had a player liaison role at the World Cup.

Possible stumbling blocks: He is still playing football and has no coaching experience.

Mark Hughes

Key Achievements: Has international coaching credentials with Wales, whom he took to the brink of Euro 2004 qualification.

Possible stumbling blocks: Although managing several clubs in the past as well as a national team, Hughes is still a young, developing manager. Like many of the other potential candidates, he has just begun a new job and Fulham are unlikely to let him go.

Alan Curbishley

Key achievements: Managed Charlton Athletic to Premier League promotion in 1997-98 season.
Kept West Ham in the Premier League in the 2006-07.

Possible stumbling blocks: Has been away from the game for almost two years now and has only ever had two management roles.

Glenn Hoddle:

Key achievements: Former England manager.
Led England to the last 16 of World Cup 1998 only succumbing on penalties to Argentina.

Possible stumbling blocks: Hoddle was sacked from the England job for controversial statements about disabled people said in an interview in 1999. He has not had a proper managerial position for four years.
